Heather Fischer of the University of Colorado won Sunday’s road race around the Pineview Reservior by two minutes over Antonneau, who outsprinted Sarah Sturm of Colorado’s Fort Lewis College to take 2nd.

Josh Yeaton, meanwhile, helped Colorado to a close 2nd place finish in the omnium. Yeaton won both the criterium and the road race, and was helped by Jeffrey Perrin, who finished 5th in the road race. But Marian’s Alder Martz (5th in the crit, 9th on the road), Alex Wiessler (9th in the crit), Isaiah Newkirk (7th on the road) did enough to fend off the Buffs and give Marian the title by 30 points. The Marian men also took bronze in the team time trial, finishing behind Fort Lewis College and Stanford in a close race in which the top three were separated by less than 10 seconds.

Marian wasn’t always the road cycling powerhouse they have become. Long known for their track prowess, by virtue of their proximity to the Major Taylor Velodrome (which the university also operates), Marian won their first national title on the road in 2010, and hasn’t finished off the top spot since. And the future looks bright as well. Antonneau is only a sophomore, and from the championship time trial team, only Miller is graduating this year. Rivera just finished her freshman year. Marian also won the cyclocross national title, led by Antonneau, and the track championships, led by Rivera.

In the Division II races, the women from Massachusetts Institute of Technology were even more dominant than Marian in D1, winning every event, and finishing 1-2 in the crit on Saturday. Duke won the men’s time trial. Patric Rostel of Colorado Mesa University won the crit, and Cortlan Brown, from nearby Bountiful, Utah and racing for Salt Lake City Community College, took the road race.

Lake Cycling has introduced the Lake CX331 road shoe, which features Outlast’s heat- and moisture-management materials in the tongue and heel. The Outlast technology in the shoe will proactively respond to changes in foot temperature to help mitigate moisture—before it begins—for increased breathability and sweat reduction.

“A closed environment coupled with high levels of activity generates extra heat, resulting in perspiration that can lead to blisters,” said Heather Manuel, Outlast North America sales and marketing director. “Products with Outlast technology are proven to reduce perspiration to help feet stay drier. In fact, tests show reduction in perspiration by as much as 44 percent.”

Features of the Lake CX331 include:
• Outlast heat-management heel and tongue liner.
• Internal carbon fiber Thermaform heel counters that mold the shoe to the foot after heating it.
• Side mounted Push/Pull BOA Closure System in the forefoot.

How Outlast Technology Works:
Products with Outlast technology interact with the microclimate next to your body and the external environment to buffer changes in temperature and humidity. Outlast products absorb excess heat (and also sweat) when there is too much, and release it as needed to maintain a more constant microclimate temperature.

With the cobbled Classics bidding us adieu, it’s easy to look back at a defiant Tom Boonen, who, with apparent ease, condemned every single member of the peloton to the role of mere peasants within his very own cobbled fiefdoms of Flanders and Roubaix.

These races rightfully command attention as violent, raw showcases of grit and grime, triumph and despair and easily paint themselves as some of cycling’s most emotionally charged races. Oftentimes then, these races, take the emphasis off of technological gizmos and doo-dads, with teams favoring equipment, like say, a good set of Ambrosio tubular rims, that has stood the test of time, and not the test of marketing-driven “innovation.”

That’s not to say that new technology doesn’t play a factor in these races, and in fact, that is increasingly not the case. This year alone marked a score of new cobble-driven bikes making their way to the market, designed exclusively with unforgiving terrain in mind, and utilizing cutting-edge know-how and resources.

This year, under Team BMC, BMC introduced the granfondo GF01. And now just several weeks off of a podium finish under Allesandro Ballan, BMC entertained our pesky and inquisitive journalistic tendencies with a media presentation in Monterey, California, home to giant aquariums, astronomical green fees and some classic car show that seems to be kind of a big deal.

BMC went to proverbial drawing board (which I’m guessing was actually a high-tech CAD suite and state of the art computer—or at least one damn-cool white board) with several distinct goals in mind for the granfondo GF01. Firstly, the bike was to complement BMC’s existing line-up, targeting an entirely different target group of riders. Calling it the gran turismo of bikes, like the car, the bike needed to maintain the performance of a race-ready machine, but marry it with the comfort needed for all-day marathons.

In order to achieve such a bike, BMC highlighted the need for vertical compliance, while maintaining, and even increasing, overall stiffness. Ergonomics were also a key factor, with BMC paying close care to their new Endurance Fit geometry which makes its debut on the GF01.

To impart greater vertical compliance, BMC utilized their Tuned Compliance Concept, which focuses on material selection and tube shapes in order to achieve the desired ride characteristics.

Already in service on BMC’s other models, the GF01 pairs TCC with BMC’s new Angled Compliance Concept (yep, another concept) which introduces vertical compliance into the frame by introducing angles which bring the materials out of plane, inciting them to provide a tangible level of flex.

Most notable in the rear dropouts, seatstays and fork, these angled tube shapes allow for 40-percent more vertical compliance over the BMC teammachine SLR01.

These flex zones are contrasted by an extremely stiff core that revolves around massive tube cross sections at the bottom bracket, downtube and toptube, which allow the GF01 to claim the title of being BMC’s stiffest bike to date.

Complementing the bike’s cobble-tuned design is a smart spec that is actually a big part of the granfondo GF01′s overall design. Featuring 28c tires, and wide-profile tubeless-ready Easton EA90 RT wheels, and comfy Fizik saddle, the bike’s spec is as much as a part of the design as anything.

As we saddle up for a ride tomorrow we’re curious to see how all this technology and design philosophy actually plays out when we put ass to saddle and wheels to pavement. Until then, here’s the fine print:

With rain looming, the Fifth Annual Red Hook Criterium went off at 9:15 P.M. as is tradition for the young, but already iconic event. Contested by roadies, track racers and messengers alike, track bikes are mandatory and the course is designed to favor those with both endurance and urban handling skills.

With nearly 100 riders taking the line, both male and female, it was a frenetic mass start—the first several laps a rough-and-tumble struggle for position. A lead group eventually forming, the main protagonists included last year’s winner and Brooklyn local Dan Chabanov, along with West Coast players Aaron Bradford from Rock Lobster and riders from the San Francisco-based MASH team.

Chabanov jumped early, with two-thirds of the race yet to play out, yet was able to build a healthy gap, with a lead group of nearly twenty riders chasing hard.

Using the corners to his advantage, Chabanov was able to hold the closing pack, still finishing 10 seconds ahead fo the chase group—plenty of time to coyly blow kisses to ironically bespectacled and mustachioed onlookers on the back stretch of the course.

The SPY Optic Belgian waffle ride has me training scared—scared I’ll get dropped, scared I won’t finish, scared I’ll be bestowed the freeloader’s Purple Jersey. But, the point is, the Spy Beligian Waffle Ride has me training—more than I have in quite some time.

SPY Optic has been out of the performance eyewear game for a few years, but that is changing quickly. With the introduction of their new model, the Screw, which we featured in the Spring issue of Paved the brand is back on the cycling scene—though it is no surprise given the number of cyclists on the company’s payroll.

Celebrating the company’s return to cycling is the first annual Belgian Waffle Ride, a innocuous sounding name for what is sure to be a painfest of epic proportions.

Roughly slated to be around 120 miles, with plenty of climbing—a lion’s share of it on dirt roads—and plenty of “friendly” competition in the form local pros and hammerheads, on paper, it’s enough to strike fear into any untrained legs (read: mine).

If that’s not fear-inducing, the race promo materials left no room for misinterpretation:

When the snow lingers but the days start to lengthen, thoughts turn to romance. through North County San Diego, where participants will clatter through agrarian hamlets and the Ardennes-like hills, over mountains, and along roughly paved roads carved through inland San Diego’s beautiful backcountry.

So, to get ready this past this past weekend, I took to the hamlet of San Luis Obispo to try and find some sort of preparation. 103 miles, nine creek crossings, two beers, and one nap at a gas station later, I’m still scared for March 25th.

But, hey, I never made it past Tenderfoot while in Boy Scouts, so being prepared has never really been my strong suit. Here’s to winging it.
