The riders and team brass at Cannondale Pro Cycling aren’t the only ones celebrating their recent success at the Critérium du Dauphiné and the Tour de Suisse at the hands of Elia Viviani and Peter Sagan.
Upstart sports nutrition player Osmo Nutrition is right behind them.
After announcing the new partnership at the Amgen Tour of California, Cannondale Pro Cycling became the first WorldTour team to adopt Osmo, serving as a sizable feather in the fledgling company’s hat.
How the partnership came to be, however, is an interesting story.
“After the devastation of the stage into Palm Springs and a talk with Cannondale Sports Marketing Director Rory Mason, I asked my friend and team sponsor, Scott Tedro of Sho-Air International to deliver some Osmo to the team hotel on Monday night” recounts Osmo co-founder Ben Capron.
Capron had Tedro deliver Osmo’s PreLoad Hydration mix, a pre-workout formula designed to maximize hydrtion before extreme efforts to help the riders rehydrate after the scorching Stage 2 in Palm Springs that saw temps well into the triple digits.
“After the brutal heat of this race’s early stages, we knew we really needed help,” adds Cannondale Pro Cycling team manager Roberto Amadio. We knew we needed immediate help, so we made the unprecedented decision to begin using Osmo in a major stage race. After using PreLoad and Active, the results were immediate and we are excited to rely on Osmo for hydration and recovery in all our North American competition and training.”
Nutrition isn’t a matter to be taken lightly at the WorldTour level, and Cannondale’s mid-race decision is a rather intriguing one. But, it seems to be working to their advantage.
Peter Sagan, a rider who saw cramps derail his Amstel Gold race—in which he was the odds-on favorite—credits Osmo for helping him recover and overcome the massive hydration deficit he incurred on Stage 2, helping him in his commanding victory in Santa Barbara the next day.
How’s that for a compliment?
The racers on the Cannondale squad will be using the entire Osmo lineup, including the Active Hydration and Acute Recovery products.
The rider’s favorite product? Why that would obviously be the Acute Recovery a la Horchata, a tasty twist on Osmo’s post-workout recovery mix—be sure to look for the recipe on the side of the canister.
