Ferrous Friday: Winter Bicycles Tool Series

Eric Estlund has been in the bespoke bicycle business for 8 years now—but he’s been into bikes his whole life. Wearing the various hats of mechaninc, fitter, tour guide, youth cycling instructor and advocate throughout the years, Estlund “decided it was time to stop thinking about building bikes and to actually do it.”
After learning the ropes at the United Bicycle institute, Estlund spent two years as a production brazer for a custom bike house in Portland, Oregon. Several thousand frames later, Estlund decided to branch out on his own, under the name Winter Bicycles.
With a penchant for performance road bikes, Estlund has mastered the form. In his custom builds he focuses on “a tailored fit, clean execution with tight integration of the bikes features, and a restrained but layered visual detailing.”
New for Estlund however, is his Tool Series, unveiled at this year’s North American Handmade Bicycle Show.
“The Tool Series bikes are designed for a rider looking for a straight forward road option for fast rides and race use. For the Tool bikes I have made some set design considerations while providing the benefit of custom sizing for the individual rider. It’s a great way to get into a heavy use training or race bike with a built to order custom fit.
“All Tool Series road sets start with a fillet brazed frame with tubes speced for the rider. They are mated with a Pegoretti Falz fork and Cane Creek 110 headset. The bikes are designed with clearance for up to a 28mm tire. I have a few pre-configured parts packages in addition to offering hand-selected groups.”
