Billed as “your vacation on your budget” Hermosa Tours’ self-guided cycling trips offer an intersting middle road between fully-guided tours and fending for yourself. By taking care of the buzz-killing day-to-day logistics Hermosa’s self-guided tours allow riders to focus on the riding, and not how their luggage and supplies are going to make to their final destination.
Whether you choose to stay in a four-star hotel in Aspen, or camp in the National Forest down the road, it’s entirely up to you. Riders provide their own food as well, so again, the sky’s the limit, or if your budget is better-suited to mac and cheese and energy gels, that’s perfectly fine as well.
Starting at $425, trips range from four to six days, and include a shuttle van and driver, lunch service (whatever the riders choose to provide), and the transportation of all of the riders’ luggage and gear to and from each destination. Trips on after include the “Best of Colorado”, which includes some of the state’s most iconic terrain, as well as many of the passes and roads from the U.S. Pro Challenge, as well as a tour from Moab to Zion.
Matt McPhee, founder of Hermosa Tours, says the trips are designed for those who don’t need constant support or guiding, and is tailored to advanced cyclists who’re looking for an adventure and not looking to be held back by a group and a guide.
Of the routes, “They’re big days,” he says.
But, should they day get the best of you, or, should one Colorado’s signature afternoon thunderstorms hit, the self-guided tours still have the luxury of a SAG wagon. And, considering the price of a rental van in and of itself, the self-guided tours present a surprisingly budget-friendly option to experienced riders looking for a guaranteed adventure.
